Video in Technical Training: What It Is Good For

Video is the default format and the most expensive to maintain. Where it genuinely outperforms text, and where it is a costly way to deliver a list. For another perspective on how people externalise memory and decision steps, see learn more.

Video has become the default for technical content. It is also the most expensive format to produce, the most expensive to localise, and the most expensive to update when the product changes.

Those costs are worth paying where video does something text cannot, and wasted where it does not.

Where video genuinely wins

Motion and sequence. How a component moves, the order of a procedure, what a mechanism does. Text describing motion is slow and imprecise.

Sound. A bearing noise, an injector knock, an exhaust leak. Nothing else conveys this, and it is under-used — a library of fault sounds is cheap to produce and immediately useful.

Access and orientation. Where the component is, what the approach looks like, what you see when the panel is off.

Narrated reasoning. A technician thinking aloud through a diagnosis — which test, why, what the reading means, what to do next. This is the highest-value use of video in technical training and the most under-produced, because it is harder to script than a procedure demonstration. See design for technicians.

Scale and consistency. One demonstration reaches the network identically, which a room of instructors does not.

And things that cannot be shown live — a fault state, a dangerous condition, an internal view.

Where video is a poor choice

Reference material. A specification, a torque value, a wiring diagram. Video is the worst possible format for something that must be found quickly and read precisely. A technician at a vehicle needs to scan, not to scrub through a timeline.

Lists and structured comparison. A table is a table.

Anything the learner needs to work through at their own pace.

Content that changes frequently. Every product change means a reshoot, and a video library that is expensive to update becomes an outdated library. See updating courseware.

Narrated on-screen text, which is slower than reading and prevents both. This is common and it is worse than either format alone.

Production decisions that determine cost

Keep the presenter out where you can. A voice over footage is far cheaper to relocalise than a person on camera speaking, and re-recording narration is straightforward where reshooting is not. See localisation.

No text baked into the frame. Overlays that can be replaced. This single decision determines a large share of localisation cost.

Short segments rather than long films. A ten-minute video that needs one correction requires re-editing a ten-minute video. Five two-minute segments require replacing one.

Chapters and indexing, so it can be navigated rather than watched.

And shoot for the update. Consistent framing and setup makes a later reshoot of one segment match the rest.

Making it usable in a workshop

Works with the sound off. Either too loud to hear, or the technician cannot safely wear headphones. Captions and on-screen indication of what is being pointed at.

Readable on a phone. Close framing, large detail, no wide shots where the important thing is small.

Scannable. A timeline with chapters, so a technician looking for one step does not watch the whole thing.

And short enough to watch between jobs.

Cheap video that works

Production values are frequently over-specified for the audience.

A well-lit shot of the actual procedure, on the actual vehicle, with clear narration, is more useful than a polished studio piece. Technicians are evaluating whether it matches what they will see, not the production.

Phone footage from a workshop can be entirely adequate for a procedure demonstration, with attention to lighting and sound.

Sound is where to spend. Poor audio makes a video unusable; modest picture quality does not.

And subject-matter accuracy matters more than anything else. A polished video showing an incorrect procedure is worse than no video, and it is more believed.

Measuring whether it is used

Watch-through rate, which for a technical procedure video is more informative than a completion.

Where people stop, which usually indicates the point where it became irrelevant to them.

Whether it is rewatched, which identifies the reference use — and content that is repeatedly rewatched should probably exist as a reference document too.

And search terms, which tell you what people expected to find and did not. See measuring training effectiveness.

The short version

Video wins on motion, sound, access, and narrated reasoning. Fault sounds in particular are cheap and under-produced.

It loses on reference material, lists and anything that changes frequently.

Keep the presenter off camera and text out of the frame — those two decisions determine localisation cost.

Short segments, chaptered, working with sound off, downloadable.

And spend on audio and on accuracy rather than on production values. Technicians are checking whether it matches the vehicle.
